On 16 December, Bran Davies earns Blodwen's anger by reminding her husband John Rowlands that Blodwen is a being of Darkness, thus depriving Blodwen of one of the few people who still loves her. Later that night, in a literal blizzard of rage, Blodwen swears personal vengeance upon Bran and those he loves, snarling, "You also will learn the meaning of loss before I am done. Each wound I have felt I will visit on you in return."

Two days later, Blodwen suggests to her ensnared minion, Robin Goodfellow, that Bran has told some inconvenient stories to the people back home, and that something ought to be done about the evil harp that has entrapped Bran's mind. (Note the crafty parallelism here.) Perhaps, Puck offers, the harp might go tragically missing?

21 December: Unaware of the brewing plots, Bran returns to Milliways with a stack of Christmas gifts, one birthday present, and his harp. Puck observes him, silently, as Bran trades information with Cordelia Vorkosigan, holds polite conversation with Fina Stone (who is quite interested in the harp herself), and wishes Will Stanton a happy birthday. While Bran is distracted, examining a rosary that Will crafted for Bran to give to his mother, Puck slips away with Bran's harp and spirits out to toss the harp in the lake outside Milliways. Bran notices the harp's absence just a bit too late. Cue panicked flailing. Bran and Will try, but fail, to trace the harp by magic. Bran suggests that his hunting horn might help matters, but unfortunately, Bran is now Bound. Bran goes off to get a room. He does not sleep well.

22 December: Puck smugly reports to Blodwen. About midday, Bran looks for solitude by the lake, but instead has a cryptic conversation with the Master Shark. Later, pale, sleepless and extremely distracted, Bran talks to a number of people. Guinevere accepts the rosary from Bran and convinces him to eat. Ako also trades gifts and comfort with Bran. Trina Echolls tries to draw Bran out, but has no luck. Anne offers Bran plum puffs, and trades warnings with him. Blodwen and Bran have a predictably icy conversation, if conversation it can be called. Moiraine Sedai offers Bran her aid. Later, Moiraine also speaks to Will Stanton about the harp and its theft.

Meanwhile: Time has never passed for Bran in his previous visits to Milliways, but in this instance all of the rules are different. Owen Davies, who already knew that danger was rising at Milliways, realizes that his son is missing. He calls Will on the evening of 22 December.

23 December: Bran, down in the bar for dinner, trades barbs with a being he eventually recognized as Robin Goodfellow, unknowing minion of Blodwen Rowlands and doer of all sorts of Mischief. At the same time, Will Stanton is learning rather more from the Master Shark's hints than Bran did. Will hurries inside to tell Bran that the harp is in the lake. Merriman, Moiraine, Ako and Nita Callahan join them. The six (heh, six) members of the Light Brigade go to the lake to reclaim the harp.

Bran and Will realize that they can call up the harp by singing Symbolic Christmas Carols. Obviously, the representatives of the Dark are not going to sit around and wait while the Light gets the harp back. Blodwen calls a blizzard to drown out the music. Moiraine counters with fire. Merriman joins them, with a kickass iron sword he just used on Puck in another subthread. Blodwen raises darkness, and under its cover, moves towards Bran and Will. Moiraine and Merriman call forth more barriers of light (using some truly awesome spells). Blodwen finds herself barred from the lake, only able to watch as Bran at last lifts the harp from the water. Hidden by more magical snow, the White Rider escapes.

While Blodwen, Moiraine and Merriman are wreaking havoc with weather patterns, Puck has his own brand of mischief. He clashes with Merriman (kickass iron sword and all), is briefly distracted by Nita, and has a shapeshifters' duel with Ako. Ako eventually wins by turning into kudzu and tying Puck up. Nita captures Puck in a dome of hardened air, so Ako can return to fox-form and get some well-deserved sleep.

24 December: In the very, very early morning, Bran, harp and all, returns home. He is met by an extremely relieved adoptive father, not to mention an equally relieved dog. Look! Bran and Owen are actually hugging! Back at the bar, Nita, Merriman and Moiraine remove Blodwen's spell from Puck, and free him from the dome.
